Our Story

Portuguese soul. Sydney heart.

Sweet Belém is an homage to Belém—the Lisbon neighbourhood where Portugal’s most iconic custard tart was born. The word “Sweet” is affectionate as much as it is descriptive: my sweet Belém, a place held close through flavour, memory and tradition.

For generations, the pastel de nata has carried the spirit of Belém far beyond the walls of the Jerónimos Monastery. Its crisp, hand-layered pastry and deeply caramelised custard are simple in appearance, yet exacting in craft. That balance of humility and precision guides everything we bake.

Our identity looks to the Belém Tower, built at the edge of the Tagus during Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Once a beacon for voyages towards new horizons, it now represents our own journey: preserving authentic Portuguese baking while sharing it with a new city and a new generation.

The blue-and-white tile pattern woven through Sweet Belém is a modern expression of Portuguese azulejos. Its repeating geometry connects heritage with movement—each tile complete on its own, yet more powerful as part of a larger story.

Established in Petersham in 2003, Sweet Belém grew in the heart of Sydney’s Portuguese community. Barangaroo is our next chapter: a waterfront home for freshly baked pastéis de nata, Portuguese pastries and the warm hospitality that has always defined us.
